Mobile Gaming Device Hits The Venetian Casino
New technology allows gamblers to play whenever, wherever
The Las Vegas Venetian casino is road-testing a new mobile gaming device that allows gamblers to play whilst on the move.
The hand-held device – similar to a Gameboy or PlayStation Portable – has a variety of games, including roulette, blackjack, slots and video poker.
Casino bosses are fully behind the new product, since it allows gamblers to place bets while away from the tables. They are not intended as a substitute, but as an add-on to playing at the tables, extending the potential time that people spend gambling.
Players must register for the machine, show ID, choose a password and put some money in their account to start playing. Each device is then linked to the individual player, by a wristband containing a chip. No other gambler can use someone else’s machine and game play is restricted to certain areas – if a player attempts to leave the casino with their gaming device it will shut down.
Once you start playing, it’s much like playing online casino games, with a touch-screen and suggestions of how to proceed. And since it’s like playing a PSP game, it’s easy to forget that you’re spending real money.
At the moment, the hand-held gambling consoles are only available at the Venetian, on trial, while the state of Nevada decides how to classify them and ensures that they meet all the necessary criteria. If all goes to plan, they will become more widely available across the Strip. The idea is that players will be able to take the devices with them anywhere within the casino resort - the shopping malls, restaurants and convention centers – so they can continue gambling while involved in other activities.
The device has been in development for five years with Cantor Gaming which has spent millions on research into mobile gaming devices. The company instigated the passing of a state law to allow the devices in 2005.
Although casinos say they will monitor gamblers to make sure the devices do not fall into the hands of minors, the PlayStation-type packaging seems sure to appeal to under-18s. The devices are set up to shut off after 30 minutes or if left inactive for several minutes, but there is no way to control adults letting curious children have a go.
However, with a plunging US economy affecting the casino industry, the latest advance in mobile gaming could help boost coffers for Las Vegas casinos.
